Introduction
You've found a university in Sharjah that looks right on paper, and someone at home has already asked the question that actually matters: will this degree count for anything in India? American University of Sharjah accreditation is where that answer begins. Accreditation isn't a marketing badge. It's the record outside bodies check before they act on your degree: a US graduate programme deciding whether to consider your application, an Indian regulator deciding whether to issue an equivalence certificate. AUS holds five of these recognitions, and you can verify every one yourself on the accrediting body's public register.

What accreditation does American University of Sharjah hold?
AUS holds one national licence and four separate international accreditations, each covering a different slice of the university. The UAE licence comes from the Commission for Academic Accreditation, the federal body that approves degree programmes, and it's been in place since 1999.
| Accrediting body | What it covers | In place since |
|---|---|---|
| Commission for Academic Accreditation (UAE) | Institutional licence, all degree programmes | 1999 |
| Middle States Commission on Higher Education (USA) | Whole institution, bachelor's through PhD | June 2004 |
| ABET | Six engineering BS degrees plus computer science | 2006 |
| NAAB | Bachelor of Architecture | 2010 |
| AACSB | School of Business Administration | April 2011 |

If you're heading into engineering, architecture or business, programme-level accreditation matters more to you than the institutional kind. That's what professional bodies abroad actually check.
The MSCHE accreditation is the one Indian families latch onto, since it's the same recognition US universities carry. It isn't permanent, though. AUS runs on a review cycle, with its next evaluation visit falling in 2027–2028. ABET is a different animal: the engineering benchmark North American employers and graduate schools use, and AUS was the first university in the Gulf region to hold it. The other universities in Sharjah differ sharply on which of these they've earned.
When was American University of Sharjah founded?
American University of Sharjah was founded in 1997 by Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah. Classes began on 4 October that year with 285 students and 30 faculty. The first graduating class, in 2001, numbered 82. Nelson Mandela lectured on campus in 2001 too.
Accreditation tracked the growth closely. The CAA licence arrived in 1999, MSCHE followed in 2004, and both ABET and AACSB landed in 2006. Architecture took NAAB in 2010, the first programme outside North America to manage it. Current programme spread sits on our AUS course and fee page.
The rankings took fifteen years to catch up with the accreditation. AUS first entered the QS world top 500 in 2012, and it now sits at =258 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. It also ranks first in the UAE for employer reputation and has held a top-10 place in the QS Arab Region rankings for 11 straight years as of the 2026 edition.
Notable American University of Sharjah alumni
Notable American University of Sharjah alumni are founders more often than they are corporate executives. Mona Kattan finished a finance degree at AUS in 2008, spent a short stretch in banking, then co-founded Huda Beauty and built the fragrance brand Kayali. Muhammad BinGhatti graduated from the College of Architecture, Art and Design in 2015 and runs Binghatti, the Dubai developer behind plans for what it bills as the world's tallest residential tower.
Architecture, mostly. Ahmed Al Ali and Farid Esmaeil, among the very first graduates of that college, founded X-Architects and took the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2019 for the Wasit Wetland Centre.
Worth saying plainly: this network is regional first. If your plan is a London job or a US doctorate, AUS opens those doors through accreditation and coursework, not through alumni in those cities.
What AUS accreditation means when you bring the degree back to India
Indian recognition is a separate process from anything AUS holds, and the rules changed recently. Equivalence certificates for foreign degrees now come from the University Grants Commission, replacing the system the Association of Indian Universities ran for decades. You apply through the UGC's equivalence portal, a standing committee reviews the file within 10 working days, and the decision follows within 15 days.
Note: These regulations took effect in 2025 and the portal is still bedding in. Confirm the current document checklist on the UGC site before you start gathering transcripts and attestations.
One carve-out matters. UGC rules don't cover professional qualifications in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, law and architecture, which stay with their Indian statutory councils. For architecture students that's good news, because the Council of Architecture already recognises the AUS Bachelor of Architecture under Section 15(1) of the Architects Act, 1972.
MSCHE accreditation makes your equivalence file straightforward, not automatic. You still apply. You still wait. Graduates of accredited UAE institutions may also reach ten-year residency through the UAE golden visa for students, but the bar is real: a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or 3.8 depending on your university's Ministry of Education classification, and an application filed within two years of graduating.
Where Study From UAE fits in
Checking accreditation looks simple until you're doing it across six universities at once, on six different sites, two of which haven't refreshed their rankings page in a full cycle. That's the gap Study From UAE works in. Our university pages carry courses, fees and accreditation status in one comparable format, and our guide to UAE scholarships for Indian students covers funding across the same institutions.
Counsellors handle what a comparison table can't: which Indian body governs your subject, and whether your programme's accreditation covers the career you're planning.
Conclusion
Match the accreditation to your subject, then verify it on the awarding body's own register before you spend money on an application. Engineering means ABET. Business means AACSB. Architecture needs NAAB plus the Council of Architecture. If you want help confirming that a specific AUS programme carries the accreditation your career plan needs, our counsellors will do that check and map the equivalence paperwork with you.
