Key Takeaways

  • AUS lists 33 undergraduate majors, 24 masters and 8 PhD programs on its website (as of 30 September 2026).
  • All undergrad majors have the same price tag of AED 110,876 per year of 12-16 credit hours in 2026-27, so Architecture and English Language and Literature majors are evenly priced, before lab fees.
  • The general MBA requires 33 credits at AED 5,480 per credit, bringing total cost to AED 180,840.
  • The five-year Bachelor of Architecture program is accredited by the US National Architectural Accrediting Board, making it the first such program outside North America to gain this status.
  • There are no law or medicine degrees on offer at AUS, but the biology department does offer a pre-med track.

Introduction

Your shortlist most likely includes three or four UAE universities, and the American University of Sharjah is the one your parents will circle first, being its fees significantly higher than those of the University of Sharjah. It is only fair to have a clear understanding of what the course list of AUS includes and what it does not. Some gaps surprise applicants late (law and medicine are the big two). This guide covers the undergraduate programs, graduate programs and PhDs, the courses and fees attached to each, and the trade-offs, so nothing ambushes you at the offer-letter stage.

How many courses does the American University of Sharjah offer?

As of September 2026, the American University of Sharjah lists 33 undergraduate majors, 24 master's degrees and 8 PhD programs across four academic units.

You'll see other totals online. Older listings say 26 majors, some pages say 28, and a few aggregator sites talk about 54 courses. The gap probably comes from the university adding programs over the years and from third parties counting majors, minors and concentrations differently. A major (your main field of study) appears on the degree; a minor (a smaller add-on subject) doesn't.

Study From UAE's American University of Sharjah profile page tracks fees and scholarships for each program.

College or school Undergraduate majors Examples
Architecture, Art and Design 5 Architecture, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Film and New Media Design
Arts and Sciences 10 Psychology, Media Communication, Biology, Data Science
Engineering 10 Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science
Business Administration 8 Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Supply Chain Management

Engineering and Arts and Sciences tie at ten majors each, so those two colleges give an undecided applicant the widest choice.

American University of Sharjah undergraduate programs and majors

The 33 majors divide into architecture and design, arts and sciences, engineering, and business, and each unit sets its own school-subject prerequisites.

Engineering applicants need math and physics at grade B or above, with the math taken in the last three years of school. Business majors need math alone. Computer science is the odd one out; it sits in the College of Engineering but asks only for math plus one science subject, the same as the science majors, and architecture and interior design ask for that pairing too.

Engineering first. The college runs ten majors, from mechanical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering and electrical engineering to additions such as Digital Construction Engineering and Management and Intelligent Systems and Mechatronics Engineering. The core degrees carry ABET accreditation (the US body that vets engineering programs). Comparing AUS against Khalifa University or the University of Sharjah? This look at engineering universities in the UAE sets them side by side.

The Bachelor of Architecture takes five years and is accredited by the US National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), the first program of its kind outside North America to earn that status. All architecture and design students also complete a one-year foundations program before the major begins. Interior Design, Graphic Design, Design Management and Film and New Media Design sit alongside it.

Arts and sciences is where the trade-offs show. Psychology is a Bachelor of Arts, and none of AUS's 24 master's degrees is in psychology, so postgraduate study means leaving AUS. Data Science lives here too, in the mathematics and statistics department, as a separate degree from computer science.

The School of Business Administration carries eight majors, including Information Systems and Business Analytics and Supply Chain Management. Economics comes both as a BA and as a business administration major. AACSB accredits the school (it's the main business-school quality mark).

AUS master's programs and MBA fees

AUS offers 24 master's degrees, and total tuition runs from AED 131,130 for most arts and sciences programs to AED 312,360 for the MFA in Trans-disciplinary Design.

The 24 split into eleven engineering degrees, five in business, six in arts and sciences and two in design. Engineering covers the branches you'd expect (civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical) plus Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, Biomedical, Mechatronics, Construction Management, Data Analytics and Engineering Systems Management. Business offers general MBA, a Master of Business Data Analytics, an MS in Accounting, Finance, Economics, and Policy degrees.

The graduate programs are charged at a fee per credit-hour, so the total column in the table below would tell the exact amount needed per student for the whole academic course, not per year. General MBA requires 33 credits at a fee of AED 5,480 per hour, which totals to AED 180,840.

Program Credits Rate per credit hour (AED) Total tuition (AED)
MA in International Studies 30 4,371 131,130
MS in Mechanical Engineering 30 5,480 164,400
MS in Finance 30 5,480 164,400
MBA (general) 33 5,480 180,840
MFA in Trans-disciplinary Design 57 5,480 312,360
Total program tuition at 2026-27 rates, before fees and housing.

Read the last column as the total amount of your degree and not an annual fee, for example, a 30-credit Master’s degree costs AED 164,400 irrespective of the field of engineering.

Note: The tuition fees mentioned are for the 2026-27 academic year. All fees are subject to the Board of Trustees’ approval, so, before creating a budget based on the given information, make sure to double-check the official program page.

For the documentation part, the Study From UAE website fully covers the essentials for Indian students interested in AUS’s master’s programs.

Are there PhD programs at AUS?

Yes, AUS runs 8 PhD programs: six in engineering and the sciences, plus two in business.

The engineering four are Civil and Environmental Engineering, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Engineering Systems Management. Materials Science and Engineering and Mathematics sit in Arts and Sciences. Finance and Management belong to the business school.

Doctoral tuition is charged per credit hour, at AED 5,480. The six engineering and science PhDs need at least 54 credits (24 of coursework and 30 on the dissertation), which totals AED 295,920. The two business PhDs need 60 credits, so AED 328,800.

Those totals look brutal, and for many applicants they're the wrong number to focus on. AUS also offers assistantships that pair a tuition waiver with a monthly stipend, and PhD applicants file a separate assistantship form alongside the main application. There's no PhD in psychology or architecture, so a research career in either means applying elsewhere.

American University of Sharjah courses and fees for 2026-27

Undergraduate tuition at AUS is AED 110,876 for the 2026-27 academic year, identical for every major, with lab or technology fees of AED 1,552 or AED 1,700 added per course.

Because the rate is flat, your major changes the total only through its length. A four-year degree comes to AED 443,504 in tuition at today's rate, and the five-year architecture degree reaches AED 554,380. Both assume a full load every year and no fee increase, which AUS can change with Board approval, so read them as a floor. A psychology student pays the same as an engineering student. If your major sits in arts and sciences, price AUS against a cheaper Sharjah option before you commit; the University of Sharjah's own 2026-27 undergraduate schedule runs from about AED 47,300 to AED 70,200 a year for non-medical programs.

Extras are discreet. Business and engineering students are required to purchase a designated laptop in their first semester, and AUS lists an English Bridge Program at AED 36,012 a semester; inquire with admissions if your IELTS score is borderline.

Scholarships move the numbers more than anything else, and the two full-tuition awards split by where you went to school. The President's scholarship applies to students completing secondary school outside the UAE. It covers tuition, lab fees, housing, a monthly stipend and three round-trip flights, for up to 20 students a year. The Chancellor's covers the same fees but is for students completing school inside the UAE. Students following the Central Board of Secondary Education or Indian curriculum at Dubai and Sharjah schools should look into the Chancellor's, not the President's, award. AUS also evaluates Merit Scholarships of 10 to 20 percent automatically for applicants with 95 percent or more in Grades 10 and 11. A 20 percent award trims about AED 22,175 a year. Study From UAE's  guide to AUS scholarships for Indian students explains who qualifies from India.

Note: Merit awards depend on available funding and aren't guaranteed, and tuition changes with Board approval, so confirm both on the AUS site before you build a budget.

Does AUS offer law or medicine?

No, AUS's program lists include no law degree and no medical degree.

The nearest thing on the medical side is a pre-med track inside the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, which is a preparation route rather than a degree that lets you practice. That also means it can't stand in for an MBBS seat, whether through NEET (India's medical entrance exam) or abroad. On the legal side there's nothing comparable; International Studies and Economics are the neighboring majors, and they're social-science degrees, not legal ones. Don't choose AUS for its name and plan to switch into law later. There's nothing to switch into.

If law is the goal, Study From UAE's listing of Bachelor of Law programs at UAE universities shows a Bachelor of Law offered by 18 or more institutions, and that's where the shortlist should start.

Timing matters as well. AUS opens applications for both Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 on 19 October 2026: Spring 2027 closes 24 December 2026, and Fall 2027's Early File Completion date is 5 July 2027, with classes starting 23 August 2027. Start attestation (official verification of your certificates) well before either date. This UAE university application deadlines calendar shows how AUS compares with other universities.

How Study From UAE Fits Into This Decision

Study From UAE doesn't run AUS admissions; the university does. What the platform can do is line AUS up against other UAE options on the same terms: program list, tuition, scholarships and city. The Find Your University Quiz narrows a shortlist by budget and course interest in a few minutes, and the ROI Calculator runs your expected salary against AUS's tuition to show a payback period instead of a guess. If you'd rather talk it through, the team handles shortlisting and application support for Indian and South Asian students. Treat it as a second opinion, and keep AUS's official pages as the final word on fees and dates.

Conclusion

Start with your college, not the university. Decide whether you're an architecture, engineering, business or arts and sciences applicant, then multiply the 2026-27 rate by the length of your degree and subtract the scholarship you could realistically win. If the total still works for one of the American University of Sharjah courses above, shortlist it. If it doesn't, you've saved yourself a wasted application. FAQ FAQs

You'll need an attested Class 12 certificate (one officially verified for UAE use), IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 (4.5 on the new scale), and grade B or better in your major's subjects: math and physics for engineering, math for business, and math plus a science subject for the science majors, including computer science, and for architecture. AUS says required averages depend on the applicant pool, so there's no fixed cut-off percentage.

AUS doesn't publish an official acceptance rate that we could find. Third-party sites quote anything from 70 to 85 percent, and those are estimates, not university data. A better signal than any percentage is the deadline: AUS reviews undergraduate applications in periods and can waitlist or defer applicants once a period fills, so applying at the start of a cycle, well before the Early File Completion date, matters more than any published rate.

It can be, depending on your major and funding. AUS ranks 258th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and first in the UAE for employer reputation, but its AED 110,876 undergraduate tuition sits well above the University of Sharjah's roughly AED 47,300 to AED 70,200 for non-medical programs. A Merit, President's or Chancellor's Scholarship changes the sums, so run the numbers with a realistic award.

Most undergraduate degrees at AUS run four years, while the Bachelor of Architecture takes five. Tuition is flat for 12 to 16 credits a semester, so finishing on schedule matters: each extra full-time semester adds AED 55,438 before lab fees and housing.

For 2026-27, continuing students pay AED 7,000 per semester for a shared room and AED 15,000 for a private room, with a semi-private room between them at AED 11,000. First-time undergraduates received a discount starting at 25 percent on the 2025-26 schedule, so confirm your rate. Utilities add AED 290 plus VAT, and halls are separate for men and women.
