American University of Sharjah Review: What Indian Students Should Know Before Applying

Quick Answer

American University of Sharjah (AUS) is one of the UAE's strongest private universities, but it's also one of the most expensive for Indian students. It sits at #=258 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Undergraduate tuition is AED 110,876 (about ₹28.7 lakh) for 2026–27, and Indian board students need 65% in Class 12.

Key Takeaways

  • AUS rose from #=332 in QS 2025 to #=258 in the QS World University Rankings 2027.
  • Tuition is a flat AED 110,876 a year for every undergraduate major in 2026–27.
  • Indian board applicants need 65% in Class 12 and IELTS Academic 6.5.
  • Merit Scholarships worth 10–20% of tuition look only at Grades 10 and 11, at a 95% average.
  • Exchange at Boston College or Peking University needs 45 credits and a 2.5 CGPA.

Introduction

AUS usually reaches an Indian student's shortlist the same way: it's the UAE name sitting highest on the QS tables. Then someone opens the fee page. This American University of Sharjah review is written for that moment, when you know the reputation and need the fine print, from 2026–27 costs in rupees to the marks CBSE and state board students need. Two traps get special attention. One is a scholarship rule that ignores your Class 12 marks. The second concerns architecture degrees back home.

American University of Sharjah review: is AUS a good university?

AUS is a good university if you want an internationally accredited professional degree in the UAE, and it has held US accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since June 2004.

The programme-level stamps matter more. Six engineering degrees carry ABET accreditation, and so does the BS in Computer Science. NAAB, the US architecture accreditor, has approved the Bachelor of Architecture, while the School of Business Administration has been AACSB-accredited since April 2011.

Then there's the climb, from #=332 in QS 2025 to #=258 in 2027. Real progress. It also gets more attention than it deserves, because an employer in Pune or Houston will look at whether your specific degree is ABET or AACSB accredited before asking about a ranking.

Check the programme, not the university.

Recognition back home is often a parent's first question. Indian equivalence for foreign degrees now runs through a UGC online portal under its 2025 regulations, which exclude architecture, medicine, law, pharmacy and nursing (UGC Equivalence Portal). AUS engineering and business graduates apply the normal way, and our breakdown of AUS accreditation and India recognition shows which body backs each degree. B.Arch graduates who want to practise in India need a separate check with the Council of Architecture, and it's smarter to make it before you enrol.

American University of Sharjah fees for Indian students in 2026–27

A first-year AUS undergraduate living on campus should budget about AED 124,367, roughly ₹32.2 lakh, before food and travel costs.

Cost item AED per year Approx. INR What to know
Tuition, all majors 110,876 ₹28.7 lakh Billed as AED 55,438 per semester
Shared room, first year 10,500 ₹2.72 lakh AED 7,000 per semester, less 25% first-year discount
Health Plan I and clinic fee 1,496 ₹38,700 For students without private insurance
Student activities fee 886 ₹22,900 AED 422 plus 5% VAT per semester
Utilities service fee 609 ₹15,800 AED 290 plus 5% VAT per semester

Source: AUS tuition and fees, 2026–27 schedule. INR at about ₹25.9 per dirham (September 2026).

Tuition makes up 89% of that total, so a scholarship moves your budget far more than a cheaper room does.

Some costs sit outside the table. You'll pay an AED 5,000 seat reservation deposit to hold your place. Engineering and business students also buy a designated laptop in orientation week, and each lab course adds AED 1,552 or AED 1,700.

Note: The AUS fee page still lists 2025–26 hall rates, and the first-year discount falls to 10% by year four, so confirm your room price before budgeting.

AUS admission requirements for CBSE, ICSE, ISC and state board students

Indian board applicants need at least 65% in Class 12, or 65% across their best two of the last three years, plus IELTS Academic 6.5. Don't read it as easy entry. Engineering and data science applicants also need B-equivalent grades in Maths and Physics.

Paperwork is where Indian files slow down. Before you enrol, certificates need attestation in India by your board and the Ministry of External Affairs, then by the UAE Embassy. You'll also need a UAE Certificate of Equivalency, applied for at least two months before classes begin.

Our UAE university admission document checklist walks through the attestation queue.

The scholarship rule is the real trap. Merit Scholarships worth 10 to 20% of tuition and lab fees are offered automatically at admission, but only for a 95% average across Grades 10 and 11. Class 12 isn't considered. Take a CBSE student with 96% in Class 10 and 94% in Class 11: that's exactly 95%, and even a 10% award saves AED 11,088 a year on tuition. Drop Class 11 to 92% and the offer is gone. Class 11 is usually a school exam in India, so that number comes from your own school's paper.

The President's Scholarship covers full tuition and lab fees, housing, a monthly stipend and three return tickets for students schooled outside the UAE. You'd need IELTS 7.0 and an SAT of 1,400 on top of a 98% equivalent average, with a March deadline (March 19 for Fall 2026). Every other award is listed in our guide to AUS scholarships and financial aid.

Study abroad and exchange programs for AUS students

AUS students can spend one or two semesters at a partner university and earn AUS credit, once they've completed 45 credits with at least a 2.5 CGPA (AUS outgoing exchange). Most programmes want 2.75.

Partners are the strong part. AUS has 27 bilateral partners, including Boston College, Texas A&M University, McMaster University and Peking University, and architecture students can apply to Politecnico di Milano.

On a bilateral exchange you pay AUS tuition as normal, so a spring at Boston College still means AED 55,438 to Sharjah, plus an AED 525 application fee and an AED 1,000 deposit that later counts toward tuition. ISEP works differently. You pay an AED 735 application fee, which is credited toward ISEP fees, then pay AUS for tuition plus a shared room with meals, and owe ISEP a USD 450 placement fee once you're placed.

Two warnings. Applications close about nine months ahead, on the fourth Thursday of November for a fall semester abroad and of April for spring. An Indian passport also means a separate US or Canadian student visa.

Treat exchange as a semester of perspective rather than a cheaper route to a Western degree, because you're paying Sharjah tuition for Boston classrooms.

Campus life for American University of Sharjah students

Campus life at AUS is international and self-contained, since about 74% of students come from abroad, representing more than 90 nationalities (QS TopUniversities).

Residence halls are separate for men and women, each with its own gym and laundry rooms. With the first-year discount, a shared room is hard to beat.

Sharjah is quieter and more conservative than Dubai, with no alcohol sold anywhere in the emirate (University of Kansas Study Abroad), so many students end up heading to Dubai for weekends and internships and the commute becomes part of the week. Plan that commute before you arrive; our guide to getting to AUS from Dubai covers the metro shuttle buses from Al Qusais and Centrepoint.

Is that a downside? For some students, yes. If you're coming for focus and a campus you rarely need to leave, it's closer to an advantage.

How Study From UAE helps you plan an AUS application

Study From UAE, a university discovery platform for Indian and South Asian students, helps you test AUS against other options before you commit money to it. Comparison comes first: you can set AUS beside other universities in Sharjah on courses and fees, all ahead of an AED 420 application.

Money comes next. Our study in UAE ROI calculator tests the ₹32.2 lakh first-year figure against a realistic starting salary and payback period, and counsellors can check which AUS scholarships your Class 10 and Class 11 marks qualify for.

Paperwork is where help saves most time. That means the attestation order, the equivalency application, seat deposit deadlines and the student visa file, which AUS sponsors once you've paid your deposit and confirmed your seat.

Before you apply to AUS

This American University of Sharjah review comes down to one trade-off: serious programme-level accreditation at close to ₹32 lakh a year. Before anything else, pull out your Class 10 and Class 11 marksheets and average them, because at 95% or above you should apply early so the Merit Scholarship offer arrives with your admission. Below it, build the budget on full fees. Our counsellors can build that first-year budget with you, rupee by rupee.

FAQ FAQs

No, it isn't a branch of a US university. AUS is an independent, non-profit university founded in Sharjah in 1997 on the American liberal arts model. It's licensed in the UAE and has been accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since June 2004.

There's no official acceptance rate on the AUS admissions pages, so treat online percentages with caution. Indian board students need at least 65% in Class 12 and IELTS 6.5, but admission is competitive, and popular majors may expect more.

Yes. SAT Math 450 is required only from American curriculum and SABIS students, not from Indian board applicants, so a CBSE or state board student can apply with Class 12 results and IELTS. An SAT score matters only for the President's Scholarship, which asks for 1,400.

You'll need IELTS Academic 6.5, or an accepted TOEFL score, and results stay valid for two years. Only IELTS and TOEFL count, so the IELTS Indicator and TOEFL iBT Home Edition won't be accepted. President's Scholarship applicants need IELTS 7.0.

The AUS application fee is AED 400 plus 5% VAT, or AED 420, which is roughly ₹10,900. It's non-refundable. Once admitted, you pay a separate AED 5,000 seat reservation deposit, and a Merit Scholarship offer depends on paying it before the deadline.
