Key Takeaways

  • The GMAT full form is Graduate Management Admission Test, and it is conducted by GMAC, not a university or government body.
  • GMAT is a test for people who want to get into business schools only. It is not a general  graduate level exam so, you will not see GMAT in medical contexts.
  • The total score you can get on GMAT ranges from 205 to 805. Your score is valid for 5 years.
  • The fee to take the GMAT is USD 275 if you take it at a test centre and USD 300 if you take it online before you add the tax. Once you add the 18% tax that GMAC charges for payments from India you should budget around INR 30,900 and INR 33,700.
  • You do not need a degree, or work experience to register for GMAT. You just need to be at least 13 years old to be eligible for the test.
  • GMAC used to have a rule that you could only take the GMAT for a limited number of times in your life but they got rid of that rule in October 2024. Now you can take the GMAT as many times as you want in your lifetime but, you can only take it for only 5 times in any 12 month period.
  • GMAC is going to start a new feature for GMAT in August 2026 called the GMAT Superscore which combines your best section scores across multiple attempts into one additional data point.
  • Some business schools in the UAE will accept the GMAT or GRE. Schools, like SP Jain will also accept the CAT or their own university test and some schools do not require any test and will ask just for an interview or look at your academic record.

Planning to Study in the UAE? Let Us Guide You the Right Way.

Introduction

So you want to know what GMAT stands for and if you truly need it to get an MBA in the UAE? Well you are not the only one who is wondering about this. The GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test. It is a test that many business schools around the world accept. There are more than 100 countries where they use the GMAT.

Some people get confused by thinking that GMAT is the same as that of GRE. Others think you only need it to study in the USA and also that it has something to do with getting into a medical school.

This guide will tell you all about the GMAT. We will start with what GMAT means, who conducts it, and who can take it, how much the GMAT costs, what you need to study for the test and how it is different, from GRE, TOEFL, IELTS and SAT. Let us start with the basics of the GMAT.

If you are specifically exploring an MBA in the UAE, these Study From UAE guides go a step further:

What Does GMAT Stand For?

The GMAT full form is the Graduate Management Admission Test used to get into Master of Business Administration, Master in Management or the Master in Finance and Business Analytics degrees. It is a computer based test that is adaptive. Meaning, it changes based on how the person taking it does.

The test does not check business knowledge itself. It measures reasoning, problem solving, and data literacy skills that predict how a candidate is likely to perform in the first year of a management programme. So whether you have seen it written out in an education context, an MBA application, or a general entrance exam list, that phrase always describes the same skills test, not a subject knowledge test.

GMAT Full Form vs GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, and SAT Full Forms

Students who want to study abroad often get confused between these things as they sound similar and are on the same list when they apply. Here is how each one is different from each other.

UAE University / Programme GMAT or GRE Required? What Is Reviewed Instead
IIM Ahmedabad Dubai Campus Yes Valid GMAT or GRE, plus a minimum of four years' work experience and faculty interview
Hult International Business School (Dubai) Yes Valid GMAT or GRE alongside relevant work experience
SP Jain School of Global Management (Dubai) Yes (flexible) GMAT, GRE, or the university's own SPJAT score, followed by an interview
Canadian University Dubai No Bachelor's transcripts reviewed for degree recognition
American University in Dubai No Statement of Purpose and two letters of recommendation
Abu Dhabi University, BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, University of Wollongong in Dubai Often no Academic record, work experience, or admission interview, depending on the specific programme
This table is really helpful if you have questions about GMAT. It explains how GMAT is different from other tests like GRE, TOEFL, IELTS and SAT. The main difference between the GMAT and these other tests is what they are used for and not which test is harder or easier. GMAT and GRE are used to test your academic skills while TOEFL and IELTS are used to check your

English skills. SAT is used for undergraduate admissions. You cannot substitute a GMAT score for an English test and vice versa.  If your UAE English test is still pending, our guide on why you may need to take the TOEFL explains when it applies alongside the GMAT, and our list of UAE universities accepting IELTS covers the other common route.

Many MBA programmes, including several in the UAE, now accept either GMAT or GRE, so it is worth checking your target university's admission page before committing to one exam. The honest answer to the everyday GRE versus GMAT dilemma is that both are aptitude tests accepted at different, overlapping sets of business schools.

GMAT Exam Format and Syllabus

The GMAT exam (previously called as GMAT Focus Edition) has 3 parts:

  • Quantitative Reasoning: This is where you do math problems, like arithmetic, algebra and problems using data.
  • Verbal Reasoning: This is where you have to think about what you read and understand it.
  • Data Insights: Here you have to look at tables and graphs and figure out what they mean.

GMAT exam has 3 parts and each part gets a score from 60 to 90. All these scores are added up to give you a total score. The total score of the exam is between 205 and 805. The whole GMAT exam takes 2 hours and 15 minutes to finish. You can take a break for 10 minutes if you want and the exam is given in English only.

A new update was released by the GMAC which introduced the GMAT Superscore that looks at all your scores on the GMAT Exam and takes the highest score from each part of your valid attempts of the exam and combines them into one total score. This score is shown as an additional data point on your official score report alongside your regular Total Score. It does not replace your Total Score, and you cannot opt out of it once it applies to your report. If you are planning a retake, this means a single weak section on one attempt no longer has to define your whole application.

GMAT Eligibility Criteria

  • You have to be at least 13 years old to appear for the test. If you are between 13-17 years, you will need to ask your parents to give consent.
  • There is no age limit, so people who are working and are in their 30s or even older can sign up for this.
  • No fixed educational qualification is required by GMAC, though most candidates hold or are completing a bachelor's degree, since that is what business schools ask for.
  • No mandatory work experience to sit the exam, although individual MBA programmes may prefer or require it separately.
  • Open to all nationalities, and the exam is conducted in English only.
  • Eligibility for the test itself is minimal, but eligibility for a specific MBA programme is set by that university, not by GMAC.

GMAT Exam Fees in India

GMAC prices the GMAT in USD everywhere, and payments made from India also attract 18% GST. The table below shows the base USD fee, its rupee conversion before tax, and the actual amount you should budget once GST is added.

Mode Fee (USD) Base INR (before GST)* Approx. INR with 18% GST*
Test Centre USD 275 Approx. INR 26,180 Approx. INR 30,900
Online (at home) USD 300 Approx. INR 28,565 Approx. INR 33,700
Additional Score Report USD 35 per school Approx. INR 3,330 Approx. INR 3,930
Rescheduling (60+ days ahead) USD 55 to 60 Approx. INR 5,240 to 5,710 Approx. INR 6,180 to 6,740
Phone Registration Service Charge USD 10 Approx. INR 950 Approx. INR 1,120
Calculated at approximately INR 95.2 per USD, the mid market rate in early August 2026. Banks or payment gateways may add a further 1 to 3 percent foreign transaction charge on top of the GST-inclusive figure, so keep a small buffer above these numbers and always confirm the exact amount on mba.com before you pay.

Since GMAC prices the exam in USD everywhere, the GMAT fee in India does not come with a discounted or India specific base price. Only the rupee conversion and the 18% GST change what you actually pay at checkout, and it is that GST step, not the sticker price, that most often catches students off guard when budgeting. Always check the "with GST" column above rather than the base conversion when you set aside money for the exam.

Which Countries Accept the GMAT?

The GMAT test is not restricted to a single country. You can take the GMAT test at Pearson VUE test centres in more than 100 countries. You can also take the GMAT test online in most regions. Many business schools use GMAT scores. These business schools are located in the US, the UK, Canada, Europe, Singapore, Australia and the UAE.

Within the UAE, requirements vary by school. SP Jain, for example, asks candidates to submit a score from one of several accepted tests: GMAT, GRE, CAT (the Indian Common Admission Test), or its own SP Jain Aptitude Test (SPJAT), and takes the best of whichever score you submit. You can even apply before your score comes through, though you will not be shortlisted until you submit it. Other institutions, such as Abu Dhabi University, often admit MBA candidates without a standardized test at all, based on academic record or an interview instead. Always confirm current requirements on the university's own admissions page, since policies change by intake, and our top MBA scholarships by UAE universities guide is a useful next stop once you know which test route you are taking.

GMAT Exam Dates in 2026

The GMAT is different from board exams or entrance tests that have a fixed date as it does not have a fixed schedule for the whole year. You can take the GMAT at a test centre or online whenever you want, as long as there are seats available.

To take the GMAT you need to create an account on the official site. Then pick a date and time that works for you considering when your application is due. You can register for the GMAT directly. If you want to get into an MBA program you should plan looking at the deadline for that program. Make sure you leave enough time to retake the GMAT if you need, because you have to wait at least 16 days before you can take it again.

Is GMAT Relevant for Medical Courses?

A lot of people search for this and the answer is- No, GMAT is not related to medicine, dentistry or healthcare admissions. GMAT is for business and management programs. If you want to study medicine then, you should look at exams relevant for the country you want to study in like NEET for India. You should also check what your target university requires for entrance because these requirements can be different.

GMAT in MBA and Entrance Exam Terminology

GMAT is a requirement for entry into graduate management programs and is not an academic certificate. One thing to clarify: the term "GMAT course" is not really correct because the GMAT is one standardised test, not a course. What people usually mean when they say this is a GMAT preparation course, which is training for the exam, not the exam itself.  Similarly, "GMAT" and "GRE" together refer to two different tests from two different groups, GMAC and ETS that many business schools now accept the same way.

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • Assuming the GMAT requires a business degree or prior work experience, when GMAC sets no such requirement.
  • Paying without checking the day's USD to INR rate and the applicable 18% GST, then being surprised by the debited amount.
  • Registering for the GMAT without checking if the target UAE university actually needs the GMAT or if it accepts something else like the CAT or if it offers a waiver.
  • Confusing the GRE with the GMAT and assuming both are accepted everywhere without checking the specific university page.

What Indian Students Should Know Before Registering

  • Documentation: Carry a valid passport as ID at Indian test centres, and keep transcripts and mark sheets ready for university applications, since business schools ask for these separately from GMAC.
  • Financial planning: Budget for the USD to INR fluctuation on the exam fee, the 18% GST, plus preparation materials and possible retakes. Treat the GST-inclusive figure, not the base USD conversion, as your real number. If you are financing your MBA itself rather than just the entrance exam, our guide to education loans for UAE studies covers the lender options Indian students typically use.
  • English test requirements: Most UAE business schools still ask for IELTS or TOEFL separately from the GMAT. Our guide on why you may need to take the TOEFL explains when each test applies.
  • Do not assume every UAE MBA programme needs a GMAT score. Confirm this on the university's admissions page first, since requirements vary by institution and intake, and cross-check against our list of top MBA universities in Dubai.

Conclusion

GMAT, Graduate Management Admission Test is the one that people take to get admissions to business schools. This test is given by GMAC and is different from other tests like GRE, TOEFL, IELTS and SAT. This test is not used for admissions to other programmes except for business schools.

Eligibility for the test is not much and the cost is around USD 275 to 300 before you add the GST and your score is good for 5 years. Before you pay to take the test, you should check if the business school in the UAE that you want to go to actually needs a GMAT score. Some schools may accept a test like the CAT or they may not need a test score at all.
