IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic: Complete Structure and Sample Answers

Quick Answer

IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic asks you to describe visual information in at least 150 words. IELTS suggests about 20 minutes for this task. Examiners score four criteria of equal weight, then average them. Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to your Writing band. A clear overview is the Task Achievement difference between Band 6 and Band 7.

Key Takeaways

  • Band 7 descriptors ask for a clear overview of main trends, differences or stages. Band 6 asks only for an attempted overview.
  • IELTS sets a minimum of 150 words for IELTS Writing Task 1 and penalises shorter answers.
  • Four criteria carry equal weight: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
  • Responses of 20 words or fewer receive Band 1 under every criterion.
  • Band 5 descriptors name mechanical recounting of detail as a limiting feature.
  • A wholly memorised answer receives Band 0 under the official scoring rules.
  • Heriot-Watt University Dubai requires a 6.0 Writing band for non STEM postgraduate entry.
  • IELTS in India costs INR 19,000 in 2026. One Skill Retake costs INR 12,650.

Introduction

Do you know which paragraph lifts a Band 6 answer towards Band 7? The official IELTS Writing band descriptors point to it. Band 6 asks only for an attempted overview. Band 7 asks for a clear overview of main trends, differences or stages.

That paragraph shapes your Task Achievement score, one of four equally weighted criteria. Many candidates omit it. They describe every number instead, and the descriptors call that mechanical recounting.

This guide to IELTS Writing Task 1 takes under 10 minutes to read. You get the official scoring rules, a structure that clears the word limit, and three sample answers. Let us begin.

What IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic Actually Asks You to Do

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 gives you a visual input and a fixed instruction. You summarise it by selecting and reporting the main features, and you compare where relevant.

The official IELTS Academic Writing format describes Task 1 as an information transfer exercise. It relates narrowly to the factual content of the diagram. Speculative explanations outside the given data earn you nothing.

That rule settles a common confusion. You never explain why a trend happened. Think of it as reading out a cricket scorecard rather than giving match commentary.

Task 1 requires connected written text rather than notes or bullet points.

How Examiners Score IELTS Writing Task 1

Each task is assessed independently. The four criteria carry equal weight. Your task score is the average of the four.

Criterion What it measures in IELTS Writing Task 1
Task Achievement Selecting key features, giving enough detail, reporting figures accurately, comparing data
Coherence and Cohesion Logical order, paragraphing, linking words, reference and substitution
Lexical Resource Range, precision, collocation, spelling and word formation
Grammatical Range and Accuracy Simple, compound and complex sentences, punctuation, error density

Here is the detail most preparation material glosses over. The descriptors treat the overview as the dividing line between bands.

Band 6 requires a relevant overview only as an attempt. Band 7 asks for a clear overview of main trends, differences or stages. Band 8 asks you to present, highlight and illustrate key features clearly.

Band 5 descriptors name two habits directly. The recounting of detail turns mechanical. Candidates focus on details without referring to the bigger picture.

Read those descriptors as a checklist. Your overview names the biggest pattern and contains no figures.

Note: IELTS updates its published descriptors periodically. Check the official IELTS scoring criteria for the current version before your test date.

The Four Paragraph Structure for IELTS Writing Task 1

Use this structure for almost every IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic question. It maps directly onto the criteria above.

Paragraph one paraphrases the question in one sentence. Change the nouns and the verbs. Never copy wording from the question. Examiners discount any language copied from the task.

Paragraph two gives the overview. State the two largest patterns and add no data.

Paragraphs three and four give grouped detail with figures. Group similar items rather than moving item by item.

Paragraph Purpose Word range
1 Paraphrased introduction 25 to 30
2 Overview of main trends 40 to 50
3 First detail group with data 50 to 60
4 Second detail group with data 50 to 60

The floor of that plan is 165 words and the ceiling is 200. You clear the minimum even on your shortest attempt.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Question Types and What Each One Rewards

Several question types appear in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1. Each rewards different language.

Question type Core skill Language focus
Line graph Describing change over time Past and future tenses, trend verbs
Bar chart Comparing quantities Comparatives, superlatives
Pie chart Describing proportions Fractions, percentages, share language
Table Selecting from dense data Ranking and grouping language
Process diagram Sequencing stages Passive voice, sequencers
Map Describing change in place Passive voice, compass directions
Mixed charts Linking two visuals Comparison across sources

An IELTS Writing Task 1 map question and an IELTS Writing Task 1 line graph question demand opposite skills. Maps need the passive voice and location language. Line graphs need tense control and trend verbs. Prepare every type, because you never choose your input on test day.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample Answer: Line Graph

The sample answers below use practice questions written for this guide.

Sample question: The graph below shows household internet subscriptions in three cities between 2010 and 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Sample answer, 166 words:

The line graph illustrates household internet subscriptions in three cities across the decade from 2010 to 2020. Figures are given in thousands of households.

Overall, subscriptions rose steeply in Riverton and gently in Kestrel Bay. Alder City moved in the opposite direction. Riverton overtook both of the other cities during this period and finished as the largest market.

Riverton began as the least connected city at 40,000 subscriptions. Its figures climbed throughout the decade and reached 210,000 by 2020. This represents more than a fivefold increase and the steepest growth on the graph. The strongest gain occurred in the second half of the period.

Kestrel Bay followed a gentler path. Subscriptions there grew from 120,000 to 180,000, a rise of 50 percent. Alder City recorded the only decline on the graph. Its figures fell from 150,000 in 2010 to 90,000 in 2020, a net loss of 60,000 households. Alder City opened the decade as the largest of the three markets and closed it as the smallest.

Map that answer against the criteria. Task Achievement is met because every figure is accurate. Each paragraph holds one topic. Lexical Resource shows range through climbed, grew and fell. The overview names all three directions and gives no figures. That matches what the Band 7 descriptor describes for Task Achievement. A Band 5 version of the same IELTS Writing Task 1 sample answer lists each city year by year. It states no pattern at all.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample Answer: Map

Map questions unsettle many candidates. The underlying logic is simple.

Sample question: The maps below show the coastal village of Seaton in 1990 and in 2025. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features. Write at least 150 words.

Sample answer, 158 words:

The two maps illustrate how the coastal village of Seaton changed between 1990 and 2025. The settlement developed from a farming community into a tourist destination.

Overall, agricultural land in the west gave way to housing and leisure facilities. The eastern shore saw the most visible transformation. Only the woodland along the northern edge survived the redevelopment intact.

Farmland occupied the western half of the village in 1990. These fields have been replaced by a housing estate and a large car park. The narrow farm track has been widened into a two lane road.

The small fishing harbour on the eastern shore has been extended into a marina. A hotel has been constructed immediately south of the new berths. A footpath now connects the marina to the centre of the village.

The village school has been demolished. A visitor centre now stands on the same site. The woodland to the north remains entirely unchanged across the two maps.

Notice the passive voice throughout this map answer. Has been replaced and has been widened carry the response. Examiners reward the unchanged woodland too.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample Answer: Process Diagram

Process questions replace tense variety with sequence.

Sample question: The diagram below shows how used glass is recycled into new containers. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features. Write at least 150 words.

Sample answer, 162 words:
The diagram illustrates the stages involved in recycling used glass into new containers. There are seven distinct stages in total.

Overall, the glass passes through collection, sorting and cleaning before it is crushed and melted. The finished containers return to shops at the end. This makes the process a closed loop rather than a straight line.

Used bottles and jars are collected from household recycling bins at the first stage. The material is then transported to a processing plant by lorry. Workers sort the glass by colour, and metal caps are removed by magnets.

The sorted glass is washed in hot water to remove residue. It is then crushed into small fragments known as cullet. This cullet is mixed with sand and soda ash before it enters the furnace.

The mixture is heated until it liquefies completely. Moulds shape the molten glass into new bottles and jars. These containers are cooled slowly and then distributed to retailers, where the cycle begins again.

Count the passive forms. Are collected, is washed and are cooled all appear. Process answers rarely need the past tense.

IELTS General Writing Task 1 Compared With the Academic Version

Both versions require at least 150 words. IELTS General Writing Task 1 asks for a letter rather than a report.

Feature Academic General Training
Input Graph, chart, table, map, process A written situation
Output A report A letter
Register Academic or neutral Formal, semi formal or informal
Key demand Selecting and comparing data Covering three bullet points
Minimum words 150 150

Check your test type before booking. Heriot-Watt University Dubai accepts IELTS Academic and does not accept IELTS General Training. Our IELTS exam pattern and syllabus page sets out both versions in full.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Vocabulary Examiners Reward

Lexical Resource assesses precision and collocation, not difficulty. Long words used wrongly lower your score.

Function Precise language for IELTS Writing Task 1
Sharp rise Soared, surged, climbed sharply
Gradual rise Rose steadily, edged upwards, grew gradually
Sharp fall Plummeted, dropped sharply
Gradual fall Declined slowly, tapered off
No change Remained stable, held steady, levelled off
Highest point Peaked at, reached a high of
Comparison Twice as many as, marginally higher than

Pair each verb with an accurate adverb. Soared gradually is a collocation error and examiners notice it immediately. Strong IELTS Writing Task 1 vocabulary also covers approximation.

How to Check Your IELTS Writing Task 1 Answer Without a Tool

Many students search for an IELTS Writing Task 1 checker. Automated tools catch spelling and grammar errors reliably. They judge Task Achievement far less reliably, and that criterion carries a quarter of your task score. Check your own work with these five steps.

  • Count your words. A response under 150 words costs you Task Achievement marks.
  • Find your overview. It names the main patterns and gives no figures.
  • Check each figure. Compare every number against the visual before you move on.
  • Review your linking words. Cut any that you have already used.
  • Check your tenses. Line graphs need past forms, and processes need the passive.

Run that check on every practice answer for two weeks. Writing more answers builds fluency. Reviewing each one against the criteria builds accuracy. Our guide to free IELTS preparation resources lists official practice materials for this routine.

Mistakes That Cost Indian Students Marks in IELTS Writing Task 1

Memorised templates create the biggest risk in IELTS Writing Task 1. The descriptors penalise memorised phrases and language lifted from the input. A wholly memorised answer receives Band 0.

Many coaching notes in India teach fixed opening sentences. Memorised phrases work against Lexical Resource.

Overwriting is the second error. A 300 word answer steals time from Task 2.

Tense errors form the third group. Data from 2010 needs past forms. Predicted data needs future forms. Process diagrams need the present passive.

Article errors sit close behind. Many South Asian first languages handle articles differently from English. Proofread for a, an and the in your final minute. Our IELTS preparation tips from Band 8 scorers cover review habits in more depth.

What Your Writing Band Means for UAE University Admission

Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1. Your Task 1 score therefore forms one third of your Writing band. That band forms one quarter of your overall score. IELTS averages the four sections and rounds to the nearest half band.

Listening Reading Writing Speaking Average Overall
6.5 6.5 5.0 7.0 6.25 6.5
6.5 6.5 5.5 6.0 6.125 6.0

Some UAE universities set a minimum for the Writing band itself. Heriot-Watt University Dubai publishes requirements by level of study.

Level of entry Overall band Section requirement
Foundation 5.5 No band below 5.0
Undergraduate 6.0 No band below 5.5
Postgraduate, STEM and design 6.0 No score below 5.5
Postgraduate, non STEM 6.0 No score below 5.5, and Writing at 6.0
Doctoral research 6.5 No individual score below 6.0

Look at the non STEM postgraduate row. A strong overall score fails there if Writing alone falls to 5.5. Our Heriot-Watt University Dubai guide covers programmes and fees in detail.

IELTS in India costs INR 19,000 in 2026. One Skill Retake costs INR 12,650. Preparing properly the first time stays cheaper.

FAQ FAQs

IELTS sets a minimum of 150 words for Task 1 and suggests about 20 minutes. Longer answers face no penalty for length alone. Extra length simply reduces the time left for Task 2.

An overview replaces a conclusion in IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic. It states the main trends or differences without figures. Repeating it at the end adds words, not marks.

A range of 165 to 200 words suits most answers. That covers an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs.

The two versions differ. Academic Task 1 requires a report on a visual. General Training Task 1 requires a letter. Both need at least 150 words.

Task 1 requires connected written text rather than notes or bullet points. Full paragraphs suit the task. Note form works against your Task Achievement score.

Examiners score Task 1 on four criteria of equal weight and average them. These are Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task 2 contributes twice as much.

Dated past data takes past forms. Predicted data takes future forms. Undated visuals take present forms. Process diagrams take the present passive throughout.

Task 1 assesses factual reporting only. Speculative explanations outside the data earn no marks. Report what the visual shows.
